What to Do After a Tooth Extraction: Your Recovery Guide

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary to maintain overall oral health. We may remove a tooth if it’s causing damage to the neighboring tooth or is painful and beyond repair.

While the tooth removal procedure is routine, taking proper care afterward ensures a smooth recovery.

What steps should you take after a tooth removal procedure?

Cornerstone Family Dentistry is committed to helping you heal comfortably with these aftercare tips.

1. Manage Bleeding with Gauze

It’s normal to experience some bleeding after the procedure. Bite down on a gauze pad for 30 minutes to encourage clot formation. If the bleeding persists, replace the gauze and keep your head elevated to slow blood flow.

2. Use Ice Packs to Reduce Swelling

Swelling can occur within the first 48 hours. Place an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for 10–15 minutes at a time. This will minimize swelling and provide pain relief.

3. Rest and Recover

Avoid physical exertion for at least 24–48 hours. Activities that raise your heart rate can increase bleeding and delay healing.

4. Choose Soft Foods

Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days. Scrambled eggs, oatmeal, and smoothies are ideal. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site.

5. Avoid Dry Sockets

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is dislodged, exposing the bone and nerves. To prevent this, avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for at least 48 hours.

6. Practice Gentle Oral Hygiene

Maintain your oral hygiene routine but be cautious around the extraction site. On the first day, avoid brushing near the area. Starting on the second day, rinse gently with a saltwater solution to keep the area clean.

7. Follow Pain Management Guidelines

Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or prescribe stronger options if necessary. Take medications as directed and avoid doubling up on doses.

8. Monitor Your Recovery

Mild discomfort and swelling are normal, but watch for signs of complications. Keep an eye out for excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection (fever, foul taste, or swelling that worsens). If these occur, contact us immediately.
