When to Eat After a Teeth Cleaning

When to Eat After a Teeth Cleaning

Regular dental cleanings are a critical part of your oral health maintenance plan. They remove plaque and buildup of bacteria to help prevent common dental issues.

However, since many patients schedule them before their day begins, mid-day, or right after work, a common question we get is “When can I eat after my dental cleaning?”

Here’s everything you need to know about eating after your cleaning.

Eating After a Regular Dental Cleaning

Most of the time, you can eat immediately after your dental cleaning if you want. A general dental cleaning takes under an hour and does not require any restrictions afterward. If you’re heading back to work or school, your cleaning won’t disrupt the rest of your day.

Eating After a Fluoride Application

For most patients, we also apply fluoride treatment after one cleaning a year. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel to help prevent tooth decay and cavities. If you receive fluoride treatment, then you should wait at least 30 minutes to eat.

It takes around 30 minutes for the fluoride to absorb and do its job fully. Eating or drinking non-water right away may disrupt the fluoride and impact its efficacy.

Be Mindful of Tooth Sensitivity

Whether or not you got fluoride applied, your teeth may feel a little sensitive after a cleaning. This is especially true if we had to remove a lot of plaque along the gumline, or if your gums bled during the cleaning.

Sensitivity is normal and should subside relatively quickly. However, for the rest of the day you may want to avoid the following:

  • Very cold or hot foods
  • Sticky, sugary treats
  • Acidic foods and drinks
