How to Handle a Dental Emergency During Sports
If a teammate or family member suffers a mouth injury, follow this playbook:
- Soft Tissue Lacerations: The mouth has a high blood supply, so cuts to the lip or tongue can look scary. Clean the area with water and apply firm pressure with a clean cloth. If the bleeding doesn’t stop after 15 minutes, it’s time for professional medical care or stitches.
- Displaced (Extruded) Teeth: If a tooth is still in the socket but has been pushed crooked or “long,” do not try to force it back. This is a clear dental emergency, and something we can help if we see you right away. Call us immediately so we can splint the tooth and potentially save the root.
